Zach Whitecloud of the Golden Knights blowing Matthew Knies up along the wall and hitting the Leafs’ young forward’s jaw.
During the second period of Wednesday night’s Maple Leafs vs. Vegas Golden Knights game in Toronto, the audience stood up in support of Fraser Minten’s first NHL career, but they also leaped up in annoyance.
Zach Whitecloud’s controversial hit
As Whitecloud was defended by teammate Simon Benoit, Knies stood up shakily and made his way to the quiet room for the concussion procedure.
Zach Whitecloud was first given a significant punishment, which was later reassessed. Though Vegas went on the power-play and Whitecloud was only given a minor penalty, Benoit was also in the box for pursuing Whitecloud.
When multiple replays of the hit were played on the Jumbotron, the Toronto crowd became increasingly enraged, which made them even more so.
Both teams became raucous when the Maple Leafs killed the penalty, and everyone eventually found a dance partner as further penalties were handed out. But in my opinion, there was one significant penalty in this game that was not called correctly. Later, during the game, it was revealed that Knies would not be coming back.
