Are you curious about the latest injury and recuperation status of Mikaela Shiffrin? The legendary skier suffered a serious injury at the Stifel Killington Cup, which led to a lot of people worrying and speculating about her health.

Here is what we currently know about the extent of her injuries, her recovery efforts, and her anticipated return to competition.

What caused Mikaela Shiffrin’s injury?

Mikaela Shiffrin participated in the women’s giant slalom competition at the Stifel Killington Cup at Killington, Vermont, on November 30, 2024.

She lost control after catching an edge on her outer ski during her second run. Shiffrin fell into the b-nets for protection.

Shriffin had been punctured when she fell. Her left oblique muscles were punctured by the tip of her ski pole, which was later found to be the cause of the injury.

Since Shiffrin remained immobilized following the collision, there were initially worries about spinal cord damage. Rescue personnel found that the extent of the puncture wound and internal damage were the cause of her immobility. Her oblique muscles developed a “cavern” as a result of the injury, which resulted in internal bleeding and severe bruises (via Sports Illustrated). She was momentarily unable to walk as a result. To control fluid accumulation and encourage healing, medical teams employed a wound vacuum.
